Ever wondered what it’s like to travel overland across a tropical African country?

Join me as I drive 950 km in 22 hours—from the wild Ruaha National Park to the shores of Lake Tanganyika. (And yes, you’ll experience it all in just 14 minutes and 27 seconds of video!)

Traveling by car is a more down-to-earth way to experience Africa compared to flying directly into national parks by small aircraft, the preferred mode of travel for most safari-goers. While it can be unpredictable and often takes longer than planned, it offers a unique window into everyday African life.

The roads range from remote dirt paths to busy highways and urban traffic. The landscapes shift from the iconic baobabs of Ruaha, to the scenic Southern Highlands, and finally to the lush, green shores and stunning underwater world of Lake Tanganyika.

You’ll also get a glimpse into life along the roadside—people walking, selling goods, and hustling to make a living.

And you’ll come to understand why it’s not wise to travel after dark. Poor road conditions, lack of street lighting, and poorly visible pedestrians and vehicles make night driving particularly hazardous. At one point, after 4 AM, I found myself mistaking large rocks in the bush for elephants—though they did help keep me alert when I was otherwise exhausted. 😊
