Ruaha National Park: Welcome to Lion Country!October 17, 2025 Dear Subscriber First Name, Did you know that the larger Ruaha ecosystem in central Tanzania is home to around 10% of the world’s remaining wild lions? Only the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti in Tanzania, as well as the adjacent Maasai Mara in Kenya, have higher lion densities. But while Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Maasai Mara have been overrun by crowds in recent years, Ruaha remains wild and largely untouched. The numbers speak for themselves: Ruaha National Park, at roughly half the size of Switzerland, hosts only nine lodges and camps, while the Serengeti—at about 70% of Ruaha’s size—accommodates more than 330, with more on the way. Clearly, Ruaha is a first choice for observing lions far from the masses. In this edition of the Shauku Afrika Explorer, I’m sharing a few of my favorite lion photographs from Ruaha National Park to give you a sense of what to expect in this spectacular, rugged wilderness.
