When the Wilderness Knocks on Your Tent

When you stay at a tented camp in Tanzania, the wilderness isn’t something you only see from a distance—it’s right there with you. Unlike Southern Africa or Namibia, where camps are usually fenced, camps in Tanzania are NOT fenced, and I regard this as a huge advantage. Here you don’t just visit the wild—you become part of it.

Imagine animals walking past your tent. Some feel safer around camp. Others simply don’t care about the fact that the camp is there. And as the sun sets, the night is alive with activity. Predators like lions, hyenas, and leopards may chase antelopes right by your tent. In the morning, you’ll see evidence of this drama in the form of fresh tracks left on the camp paths—paths that the staff carefully sweep clean each day, so you can discover clues of the night’s adventures.

Nights at a tented camp are a symphony of sounds, each one connecting you to the untamed world around you. The hum of thousands of cicadas and frogs fills the air, mingling with the calls of nocturnal birds and the occasional grunt of a hippo. If you camp near water, you may hear hippos grazing around your tent, their sounds not unlike cows munching in a pasture.

Then there are the lions—their roars can be heard from up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) away. Once they are only 1 to 2 kilometers (1 mile) away, it feels like they’re right outside your tent. Your pounding heart will tell you when they actually are... But don’t worry, lions aren’t about to tear through your tent. This may be a Hollywood trope, but in reality, it’s a far cry from the truth. Still, if you're ever feeling uneasy, all tents come with walkie-talkies and panic horns—but, truth be told, I’ve never known anyone to use the latter 😉.

At night, under the moonlight, you may catch glimpses of animal silhouettes through the mosquito mesh of your tent. For sure, the sounds of passing elephants’ grumbling, a hyena's distant whoop, or a leopard’s deep, guttural growl will set your imagination alight. They will fill you with a feeling of awe and connection to the wild. And the next morning, when you share your experience with your guide, they’ll effortlessly unravel the mystery of who visited your camp during the night.

Tanzania’s camps offer a unique opportunity to connect with nature in ways you won’t find elsewhere. Some camps even have a “resident” elephant bull. And no, camps don’t actually keep them for their guests. It just happens that camps lie within an elephant bull’s home range. The pictures above give you an impression of daytime camp life. The elephant that you see through the mesh of the camp bar is “Baba Roho” at Roho ya Selous camp in Nyerere National Park. He has also come to drink from the camp pool before. The last picture shows the mischievous work of baboons who came to TP my bathroom during my recent visit to Mahale National Park 😉.
