Off the Beaten Track in Northern Tanzania

While Northern Tanzania’s Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Kilimanjaro are world-famous, they’ve become overwhelmed by mass tourism—even during the so-called “low season.” Peripheral parks like Tarangire and Lake Manyara are equally affected. But does this mean you should avoid Northern Tanzania altogether? What if I told you there are still untouched corners of Northern Tanzania, just a stone’s throw from the crowds, where you can experience nature in its purest form?

Here are 3 stunning places that offer breathtaking views, incredible wildlife, and a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere in Northern Tanzania:

1. Enduimet

Tucked away from the bustling Northern Circuit, Enduimet Wildlife Management Area is a hidden treasure of vast Maasai savannah framed by the majestic peaks of Kilimanjaro and Meru. Bordering Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Parks, as well as Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, Enduimet is a haven for wildlife, which roams freely between these protected areas. It’s not just about the iconic super-tuskers of Amboseli—this area offers a largely peaceful coexistence between Maasai people and wildlife. As such, it’s a deeply authentic place that remains unspoiled by tourism. Take a look at the serene Shu'mata Camp and see for yourself why this area embodies responsible tourism.

2. Lake Natron & Ol Doinyo Lengai

Lake Natron, a remote salt lake, serves as a breeding ground for hundreds of thousands of flamingos. Just south of the lake, the awe-inspiring Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano rises steeply above the Maasai steppe, undisputedly earning its place as "The Mountain of God." The extraordinary light here, likely influenced by the reflections from the partially crystallized lake, is unlike anything I’ve ever captured. The vast surrounding wilderness is filled with zebras, giraffes, and Maasai herders. In short, it’s an otherworldly place.

3. Mkomazi

Mkomazi National Park is a serene, secluded gem scenically framed by the Pare mountains and sharing an unfenced border with Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park. With rugged mountains, dry plains, and the stunning backdrop of Kilimanjaro, it’s surprising that few travelers include it on their itineraries. At Mkomazi, you can witness rare wildlife like Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, and the elusive Lesser Kudu. Conservation efforts have particularly focused on the endangered African wild dog and the reintroduction of the black rhino.

Northern Tanzania offers far more than its famous national parks. There’s so much more to discover, with hidden gems just waiting to be explored. The great advantage of this region is its established tourism infrastructure, meaning that all of the places mentioned above are easily accessible. Yet, despite their proximity to well-known destinations, you’ll find that these areas remain blissfully uncrowded, allowing you to enjoy a truly tranquil and authentic safari experience, often with few, if any, other visitors.
