Into the Bustle: Dar es Salaam’s Fish Market

Over the past six months, I’ve been very busy organizing trips for my clients, while also being back in Tanzania several times on reconnaissance. This has kept me from sharing my stories and discoveries with you.

As a result, some of you have quite rightly started inquiring whether you had accidentally unsubscribed from the Shauku Afrika Explorer. I can assure you: you haven’t! I’m still here, I have many more stories to tell, and I’ll try not to keep you waiting this long again.

Today, I’d like to take you to a fascinating place in Dar es Salaam that sees surprisingly few foreign visitors: Soko la Samaki—the fish market.

In the heart of this city of more than seven million people, fishermen bring in their catch from the Indian Ocean every day. The market is swirling with color and activity.

Fish of every imaginable shape, size and color are carried from the boats, laid out, inspected, auctioned, cleaned and sold. Fishermen, fishmongers, porters and buyers move through the crowds. There is shouting, bargaining, laughing—and everywhere, something is happening.

If you enjoy photography, you’ll find fascinating subjects wherever you look. But even if you’ve only come to look around and experience everyday life, there are few better places in Dar es Salaam to do so.

What surprises me most, however, is how few foreign visitors ever come here, despite being in the middle of one of Africa’s largest cities. If you do spot a foreign face, it is more likely to be a restaurant owner buying fish than someone carrying a camera.

Perhaps the bustle feels intimidating from the outside. But step into it and the experience is quite different. People are friendly and curious. They will gladly show you what they are selling.

When I send my guests to the fish market, I usually have one of my drivers accompany them. They know the market well and are familiar with many of the people working there. Having someone by your side who knows his way around makes it easy to relax, move freely through the crowds, take photographs and simply enjoy the market for what it is.

Not all the fish leaves the market raw. Some of the morning’s catch is cooked right there and served as street food. If you’re up for it, try some and consider it a Tanzanian breakfast.
