Seasonal Wonders in Tanzania’s Nyerere National ParkNovember 21, 2024 Dear Subscriber First Name, About three years ago, I witnessed one of nature’s most primal encounters—two lionesses battling a crocodile over a zebra on the banks of Lake Nzerakera in Nyerere National Park. Carved from the famous Selous Game Reserve in 2019, Nyerere National Park covers an area the size of Belgium or South Carolina. Unlike the other three UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites in Tanzania, however, it remains mostly untouched by mass tourism. It is here, in this wild and remote stretch of Tanzania, that you can witness nature’s most breathtaking dramas unfold. It was the end of the dry season, and animals were at their most vulnerable. As we drove along the nearly dried up Lake Nzerakera, a gathering of 65 crocodiles scattered into the water, leaving behind their prize—a dead zebra—and one single adamant crocodile apparently unwilling to give up its claim. Two lionesses, who had been lurking in the nearby bush saw their chance and entered the scene ready to take what they could.
