Coastal Tanzania: So Much More Than Zanzibar

Tanzania makes it easy to end any safari adventure in total seclusion—on a quiet stretch of palm-fringed beach. But are you aware that there’s much more to discover than the famous spice island of Unguja—more commonly known as Zanzibar?

Yes, the coral beaches and ancient alleyways of Stone Town are a marvel. But Tanzania’s coastline stretches far beyond, hiding pockets of silence, reefs bursting with life, and islands that have changed little since pre-colonial times.

On Pemba, the roads are smooth (thanks to a U.S.-funded program), but mostly used by oxcarts. Cars? Maybe a hundred on this fairly sizable island. What you’ll find instead: fishermen mending nets under breadfruit trees, beaches without footprints, and a pleasant warm breeze carrying all your worries away.

Further south lies Mafia Island—home to the sensational coral banks of Chole Bay, untouched by dynamite fishing and rich in marine life. Swim with whale sharks between October and December. Watch sea turtles hatch. Explore ancient Swahili ruins on Chole and Juani, or sleep in a treehouse at the remarkable Chole Mjini Lodge.

Even the bustling city of Dar es Salaam has its own coastal charm. Just offshore, small islands are easily accessible for a day of swimming, freshly caught seafood, and perhaps a glimpse of the rare and impressive Coconut Crab.

Far from being just an add-on, Coastal Tanzania is a destination in its own right—rich with opportunities to experience remarkable nature, layered history, and the unique flavors of Swahili culture and cuisine.
