Lake Victoria may be Africa’s largest freshwater lake by surface area (and the second largest in the world), but it’s relatively shallow. Lake Tanganyika, by contrast, is a rift lake nearly a mile deep—1,470 meters to be exact—making it the second deepest freshwater lake in the world, after Lake Baikal. Lake Tanganyika holds an astonishing 16% of the planet’s freshwater—just imagine that—making it Africa’s largest freshwater reservoir, and second only to Baikal globally. Stretching 673 kilometers from north to south, it’s also the world’s longest lake—longer, in fact, than the straight-line distance between Hamburg and Munich, or between San Francisco and Los Angeles. But Lake Tanganyika is more than just impressive figures. Unlike its neighbor Victoria, it remains sparsely inhabited and retains a pristine, untouched feel. This is largely thanks to the steep mountain ranges and hills that surround it—many still cloaked in dense tropical rainforest. These forests also form the southeasternmost habitat for chimpanzees in Africa. In Tanzania, these chimpanzees are protected within two national parks—Gombe and Mahale—both located along the lake’s remote shoreline.
